Just like classic pen and paper role playing games, most of the players know the clear cut line between fantasy and reality. The amount of time needed to dedicate to a WOW game just to stay on top of the curve is more than any casual gamer has. The competitive nature of video gamers push many of them to spend more time than they can afford to have the most powerful character possible. Plenty of college students have failed out of college because of the downward spiral that WOW addiction can cause. Once a student gets behind in a class, they can become depressed. WOW can be a good way to take your mind off the problem. A planned hour of play can easily turn into three or four. Soon, the once small problem of turning a project in late becomes test material left unstudied.

The stories have a wide range, a kid leaping from a building claiming to be reenacting a spell from WOW, parents not feeding their children for days due to their in-game needs, to a real life stabbing over a virtual theft. After playing the games online for a while, it is evident that some people will inevitably take the virtual world too seriously. It’s a game, meant for fun. There are plenty of casual players, but some take things too personally or too seriously. That’s when it begins to borderline on addiction, and becomes dangerous.

In an America where everyone is becoming more enlightened and in touch with themselves, there seem to be twelve step programs to help contain the addictions of every sort. Now the kids who grew up playing video games are growing older, and still playing them. Video games are a form of entertainment, a method to escape from the toil of every day life no different than television. WOW offers its players a chance to adventure in a virtual world that many of their customers are familiar with from the Warcraft franchise.

The online role playing genre however lends itself to addiction and competitive nature very easily. A portion of the game is attaining the maximum level; level 60 in WOW. Only the people who have achieved this feat can possibly hope to have any influence. At maximum level, one would think there’s not much left to do in the game, after all, there is no more improvement that the character can strive for. With the Player versus Player (PvP) ranking system, and “end game” content, that’s hardly the truth. Through the PvP system WOW has put in place, players may view their characters rating against all others that they play with. The PvP system rewards player for each enemy player they slay. The more foes killed, the higher the rating. Players are ranked on quantity rather than quality, meaning the players with the most time to dedicate to the game get the highest rank and reward. The “end game” content is mainly made up of raid instances, challenging dungeons and content that requires a group of forty people to coordinate and spend six to eight hours a night to complete a dungeon. There are currently three such instances in the game, meaning a raid group who wants to do all three, as they often do, would have to dedicate a minimum of three nights of eight hours to just those instances. That’s the equivalent of a part time job playing WOW. The players gain nothing tangible for their time, but their characters have a chance to get some new armor or a new weapon for the time spent.

Because of the disposition some of the guys have on women gamers; some girls actively try to hide their gender. This isn’t hard, since according to Cezzani of Mal’Ganis, “Ninety percent of female characters are played by ten percent of the guys.” Whether or not those figures are close to accurate, the point remains the same. There are enough girl characters running around WOW that a real female can hide her gender simply by not admitting to it.

The male population of the any online community, WOW included, is highly competitive, and the general feeling in an aggressive activity is that girls cannot perform on the same level as boys. On the virtual battlefield its far from true, but girl gamers are still considered underdogs and have to prove themselves worthy. They may come under harder scrutiny simply because they are female.

The male gamers must learn respect for the female gamers. They are not there simply to pick up guys nor as part of the entertainment for male players. They don’t want to be hit on, or asked what they look like in real life. They will accept kindness, and will often times be friendly, but that is no indication that they are less of a gamer than anyone else who plays in a virtual world like WOW.

The exact ratio of female players to male players in WOW is not known, but it is a far lower number than in the real world. Roderick, of the Mal’Ganis Server estimates, “I’d guess I know maybe ten girl players on this server.” Roderick ran a guild of over 200 people, that’s a staggeringly low percentage. With that sort of male saturation, girl gamers can have a tough time breaking into the “boys club” that exists beneath the surface.

To the dismay of much of the population of WOW, and the online community, girls do play video games. What makes a girl play a game online? Are they looking to pick up boys? Are they so socially inept that they can’t talk to anyone in the real world? Are they just plain ugly? Or are they really just a guy pretending to be a girl? None of these things are true. They play the game for the same reason everyone plays. They play for entertainment. Though women in the real life are striving for equality in a male dominated world, and arguably making progress, the ladies playing online games have a much harder task in front of them.

Those that hide their gender do it for a reason, to avoid the stereotypes and sexual harassment. It may be due to the age or maturity of the individual talking to the girl gamer, or perhaps because there are seemingly no repercussions in an online community where you can log off and not have to deal with the consequences. WOW has a strict policy against any sort of threatening or hurtful communications that removes the anonymity from it. In severe cases Blizzard will revoke the players account, taking away their character and possessions. But the same problems that exist in the real world exist in the virtual world. Many of the women who go through the torture of this abuse will never report it.

“We noticed that there was a lot of downtime in MMOs,” I was told, “that make you not want to hunch over your keyboard. We’re trying to add a level of comfort to the gaming experience”.

World of Warcraft is only the beginning of Switchblade’s planned penetration into the MMO biz. In fact, Blue Orb is planning to launch versions (called “blades”) for: Guild Wars, Tabula Rasa, Lord of the Rings Online and Hellgate: London in mid-late January and beyond that they are looking to expand to 25-30 blades.

Switchblade: A Cure for the Hunch?Managing Editor Jon Wood recently sat down with the guys from Blue Orb, the company that has created Switchblade. Switchblade is a program that allows gamers to use an XBox 360 controller to play World of Warcraft.

How do the game companies feel about this product?

It’s a free download, and it’s available for download through X-fire. “X-Fire has been an incredible partner,” Moyer said of the company. “We’re very pleased with the results [of the launch so far]”.

So, how do you make money?

There are four buttons on the 360 controller, X, Y, A & B. There are 12 available actions on the action bar. The first four are mapped to X,Y,A,B, to activate the next four (1,2,3,4), you press the left trigger to activate the next four (5,6,7,8) and the right trigger activates the last four (9,10,11,12). The D-Pad on the controller can be used to move through the various action bars.

Aaron told me that throughout the summer, they employed “usability studies” (think focus group) to test the product. They found that people who weren’t MMO players tended to use the controller pretty much 100% of the time, while more MMO savvy players seemed to prefer to use it in conjunction with a keyboard. It’s important to note here that using the Switchblade software doesn’t disable the keyboard or its functions, and it can still be used to play.

I was joined in the interview by the company’s VP of Business Development, Aaron Lavine and their Lead Software Engineer, Ahron Moyer. They told me that on October 16th, they launched this new piece of software that would do as the advertisement states, let gamers play World of Warcraft using an Xbox 360 controller.

What does it cost?

As it turns out, Blizzard isn’t affiliated with Switchblade, but the guys were very quick to point out that they have spoken to Blizzard about it and they are aware of the product. “We’re not trying to be coy,” Aaron told me, “we’re full disclosure”.

One of the sticks on the 360 controller serves the same purpose as your mouse, while the other allows directional movement. I went on to ask them about combat. How will the 360 controller allow players to make all of their available attacks and actions? The answer was surprisingly simple:

The business model for Switchblade is advertisement based, meaning that it’s free to the user. This can, however, be a mixed blessing and really depends on how it’s handled. If, for example, using this software somehow forced players to look at ads while they were gaming it might cause problems. Fortunately, that isn’t the case.
